Text: Micah 3:8a

 

Sermon: Micah 3:8a

 

The Bible teaches us today the following.

A prophet is sent by God.

He is given an important task.

 

The message today is:

 

Theme: God fills his prophet with power

1) You are weak when you are called

2) You are full of power after the Spirit has taught you the truth

 

1) You are incompetent when you are called

In the Old Testament we see everytime the same pattern.

Every time when God calls someone to be a prophet, that person says: no thank you.

People were afraid to become a prophet.

Think of the prophet Jeremiah.

He complains that he is too young.

“Ah, Lord GOD, I truly cannot speak, for I am young.” (Jeremiah 1:6)

I am too afraid.

Moses also complained:

I cannot speak.

Why do You ask me?

Micah was a young man.

He came from the countryside.

God calls him to go to Jerusalem.

He must go and prophesy in Jerusalem:

God is going to judge this big city!

Will Micah dare to do this?

 

Think also of the prophet Jonah.

He too was called by God:

Go to Nineveh!

Tell the people that I am going to judge them!

They must repent!

Jonah too had objections.

He did not listen to the LORD.

He did not go to the east, where Nineveh was.

He went to the West.

We can assume that Micah also had a hard time.

He asked himself:

Am I ready to be a prophet?

 

What does it mean to be a prophet?

There are different kinds of prophets.

There are good prophets.

There are bad prophets.

We read about them in chapter 3.

Some work with wrong motives.

Some just want people to praise them.

Others are too afraid to speak the truth.

They change the words that God has given them.

They only say what people want to hear.

Others just want money.

In Micah's time there were different kinds of prophets.

The LORD warns them.

Verse 5:

“This is what the LORD says about the prophets who lead my people astray, who proclaim peace when they have something to bite with their teeth; but against him who has nothing in his mouth they declare war!”

These prophets do not want to help people who cannot pay.

But they are not true prophets.

 

A true prophet preaches God's Word.

To everyone, and always.

He warns when necessary.

He comforts when necessary.

 

Micah had to be a true prophet.

He did not have to be afraid of people.

He only had to listen to God.

He is only a messenger of God.

Was it difficult for Micah?

I think so.

It was very stressful for him.

But let's ask now:

Did it stay that way?

Did he stay afraid?

Did he stay stressed?

The Bible gives the answer.

 

Verse 8 says:

Micah is filled with the Holy Spirit.

What does a prophet filled with the Holy Spirit look like?

He is not a prophet who only speaks what people want to hear.

He is not a prophet who only helps people who can pay.

He is not someone who trusts in himself.

He is not necessarily someone who can speak very convincingly.

But a true prophet is someone who listens to God’s Word.

He may be shy.

But he trembles at God’s Word.

Such a person can be used by God.

None of us are true prophets in ourselves.

That is the problem.

Micah was not either.

When he was called, he was not confident.

Just like Jonah, he was afraid of the LORD.

When Ezekiel was called, he was shocked.

He was sick for seven days.

He could not understand why the LORD was calling him.

But the beautiful message is:

It didn't stay that way.

Because when the LORD calls a prophet, He changes him.

He grabs him.

He makes him capable.

The Spirit of God works in his heart.

The Holy Spirit convinces him.

The Holy Spirit makes him brave.

Now he is no longer afraid of the LORD.

Now he is no longer afraid of the truth.

Now he is filled with power.

Now he will speak the truth.

No matter what people think.

Think again of the prophet Jonah.

The LORD made him ready.

Finally he went to Nineveh.

If a prophet is obedient, if a prophet trusts in God, then he receives the strength.

He is now ready to do what God wants him to do.

Brothers, are you also ready?

Will you go where God sends you?

Will you preach his Word?

In the church, and in the houses?

Also think of the prophet Moses.

Moses was not willing either.

But God worked in him until he was willing.

Moses could not speak well.

But the LORD gave Moses the courage.

He was no longer afraid to go to Pharaoh.

He was no longer afraid to speak the truth.

Jonah was no longer afraid either.

And Micah was not afraid either.

Why?

The Bible gives the answer.

It was not Micah’s achievement.

It was the work of the Spirit of the LORD.

Micah was a sinful man.

Micah doubted.

Micah could not speak well.

But the Spirit convinced Micah.

The Spirit made Micah powerful.

Now Micah is no longer afraid to speak the truth.

The truth burns in him like a fire.

He can no longer do otherwise.

He must tell it!

Congregation, brothers who are going to be office bearers:

Are you willing?

Are you ready to speak the truth?

It is not always easy to speak the truth.

We prefer to remain silent about some things.

But when the Spirit dwells in us, we have no choice.

You feel the fire of the Holy Spirit in you.

That fire will burn you if you remain silent.

The LORD also called the prophet Ezekiel.

He had to speak the truth to God’s people.

If he does not do this, they will perish.

And then it will be his fault.

God will demand their blood from him.

But if he does speak the truth, the prophet has saved his own life.

Yes, if you are a prophet, the truth becomes like a fire in you.

It will warm you and give you strength to be a good prophet.

But if you don’t want to speak God’s Word, that fire will burn you.

You must not keep the truth to yourself.

 

Micah was sent by God.

He became a prophet.

It was not his achievement.

God called him.

Now he cannot escape.

But God gives him the strength.

He comes from the countryside.

He is uneducated.

But he is no longer afraid to speak.

He will even speak to the government.

He will speak to the rulers of the land.

In verses 1 and 9 he says:

“Hear this, O heads of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel! Is it not fitting for you to know justice?” (verse 1)

“Hear this, O heads of the house of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel! You who abhor justice and pervert all equity,

you who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with iniquity!” (verse 9-10)

You seek bribes (verse 11).

You tell people:

God loves you.

Nothing will happen to you.

But you lie.

It is not the word of the LORD.

To the contrary, Jerusalem will be destroyed.

It is your fault.

 

Brothers and sisters, what does this chapter teach us?

The message is:

God fills his prophet with power.

Let's start with this.

When you are ordained as an elder, or a deacon, or when you become a member of the church, you must ask:

Am I also full of power?

Am I full of the Spirit of the LORD?

Will I love the truth?

Do you dare to do it?

It is not always easy.

We do not always speak the truth.

We first think about the consequences.

At work.

In the family.

In the church.

 

Of course, we must speak the truth in love.

It is not our achievement if we love the truth.

It makes us humble.

We are merciful.

We are not rude.

An elder and deacon who loves the truth is humble and kind.

He will help any person.

Rich or poor.

Important or unimportant.

He will listen well.

But he will also speak honestly.

Some people will not appreciate it.

But an office bearer realizes that God sends him.

His reputation does not depend on people.

The only thing that matters:

He must obey God.

When people hate a prophet, it is not easy.

Think of the prophet Elijah.

He became depressed.

He laid down under a bush.

He wished he could die.

But the LORD lifted him up again.

Elijah did not want to go back, he was too tired and depressed.

But the Spirit of the LORD gave him strength again.

 

The work of an elder and deacon is not always easy.

Sometimes people do not want to open their doors for you.

But then you do not have to feel guilty.

Because God sent you.

The LORD has already warned you:

Not everyone will listen to you.

Not everyone will open his door.

But do not feel guilty.

You must only bring my Word.

I will open the doors and hearts, where I want.

My power will keep you standing.

I send you.

This is your identity.

This message is important for every church member.

Does the LORD's Word burn like a fire in you?

Do you read from the Bible every day?

If you do not know God's Word, you cannot be a prophet.

If you do not live according to God's Word, you cannot be a prophet either.

I conclude with the most important thing.

Our Lord Jesus Christ is the greatest Prophet.

If we follow Him, we will be good prophets.

If we love Him, His Spirit will give us power.

When He was on earth, He was the perfect prophet.

He was not afraid of the truth.

He even died for the truth.

In Christ we receive everything to be a good prophet.

Beloved brothers, stay with Jesus Christ.

Follow Him every day.

He will put the right words in your mouth.

He will make you brave.

Jesus promises you in His Word:

“If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? ...

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other creature, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:31-32, 37-39)

Brothers, you can rely on Jesus Christ.

He will give you everything to be a good elder, and to be a good deacon.

Congregation, you can also rely on Jesus Christ.

He will give you everything to be a good congregation.
