The Free Reformed Churches of South Africa (FRCSA) heard God’s
calling to spread His Gospel in the words of Matthew 28. Mission work
in Pretoria was initially started in 1964 in the Mamelodi area, which
is situated east of downtown Pretoria. Mission work was also started
by the congregation of Pretoria, but soon it became apparent that the
differences in language and culture necessitate a missionary
appropriately trained for this specific calling.
The first missionary began his work in Mamelodi in 1964. Over the
next 4 decades a number of missionaries would be called and currently
the mission work in Pretoria is shared between two churches, namely
Pretoria Maranata and Mamelodi. The FRC Pretoria Maranata is
responsible for mission work in Soshanguve while FRC Mamelodi is
responsible for spreading the Word of God in Nellmapius. The FRC
Pretoria Maranata has 2 missionaries working exclusively in the area
north of Pretoria, being Reverends Jerry Mhlanga and Pieter Boon,
while the work in Mamelodi is directed by Reverend Tebogo Mogale, the
minister of the FRC Mamelodi.
The black areas where mission work is currently focused developed
due to the apartheid policy of the previous government. Since the
developments in our democracy (1994) not much has changed within
these areas, although more and more black people are moving closer to
the cities. Mamelodi and Soshanguve are still both primarily black
suburbs.
Mission work is focused in the following areas:
• Nellmapius (South
of Mamelodi)
•
Soshanguve South East
•
Soshanguve Centre
•
Soshanguve South
