This English page has been created to provide you with a brief summary of the content of our homepage.

We are a bond of churches, known as the Vrye Gereformeerde Kerke (Free Reformed Churches) of South Africa. This bond of churches is Afrikaans speaking. The first church was established in Pretoria on 8 October 1950. Eventually other churches have also been established in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Bethal. See the Gemeentes & Predikante (Congregations & Ministers) page for address details.

We wish to be truly Reformed churches in South Africa. As such, we believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, which is a guide for our lives. We accept the three Ecumenical Creeds, namely:

  • The Apostles Creed
  • The Nicene Creed
  • The Athanasian Creed

We also accept the Three Forms of Unity, which were written around the Great Reformation of the 16th Century:

  • The Belgic Confession
  • The Heidelberg Catechism
  • The Canons of Dort

Our Church Order is based on that which was written at the Synod of Dort 1618/19.

We uphold close sister relations with:

Brotherly contacts are also maintained with the following churches:

  • The Free Church of Southern Africa (Suid Afrika)
  • The Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (Malawi & Zimbabwe)
  • African Evangelical Presbyterian Chruch (Kenia)
  • Reformed Church in East Africa (Kenia)
  • Church of Christ in Sudan amongst the Tiv

In addition to these contacts we are also a member of the International Conference of Reformed Churches (ICRC), of which various other churches throughout the world are members, including:

We have recently held a synod in Bethal. Please see our English synod page for further details.

If you wish to receive further information in English, we refer you to the webpages of our Australian and Canadian/American sister churches. Please feel free to contact us if you have any queries/comments.
